DEFINING DANCE

Dance is a form of art, as well as a form of communication. Dancing is to entertain, to tell a story, to say something that would have been harder to say with words. There are as many different styles of dances as there are different types of dancers. Dance can be split up into many subcategories: ballet, tap, hiphop, jazz, modern, contemporary, and everything between. Each style has its own voice, tone, style, and purpose. For example, hiphop may have a very upbeat or aggressive vibe compared to a calmer, classical style of ballet. Hiphop typically intends to entertain an audience; its popular style is something almost anyone can recognize. Modern and contemporary both are stylistic and focus hard on the quality of the movement. Jazz is full of technique and mind-blowing tricks with the intent to make the audiences jaws drop. Dance is unique in the way that it requires as much athleticism as it does artistry. It's also unique in the sense that each style of dance can have it's own purpose, tone, or conventions according to the music or story the choreographer has created. Turning and twirling in a studio all day may sound easy, but dance is an art that requires finesse. Dancing is having complete control of the body, yet letting go of it all at the same time. Dancing is mending the blisters and scars on your feet only to obtain more the next day.  Dancing is a difficult task and people that choreograph, teach, compete, or perform dance for a living devote a lot of time and effort to this physical art. These people dance to live; they live to dance.
