ABOUT ME

My name is Ryker Laramore. I was born in Tallahassee, Florida in 1997. I’m currently an undergraduate freshman at Florida State University studying psychology. I’ve created this website as a project for my freshman english class and as a hub of information about dance majors; however, I have been questioning if I should switch majors to study dance at FSU. Even though most serious dancers start when they are just three years old, I started dancing at the age of ten with ballet basics and some technique as anyone else would. Dancing really grew on me, and I really grew in dance which caused me to want to further my dedication to the competition level the following year. My next accomplishment was becoming the first male to audition and make it on to the Leon High School Dance Team. I had to resign as captain and from the team in the middle of my senior year to spend more time at my studio, Dance Fusion Studios here in Tallahassee, Florida. I’ve been to 3 competitions with DFS and just won the 2015 Champion Title of Mr. Nexstar at a competition in Lakeland, Florida. These achievements and past 8 years of devoting my life to dance really mean a lot to me. I still dance 10-20 hours a week, but the transition into the laborious college lifestyle has taken its toll. The idea of paying a lot of money to sit in some classrooms to receive a bachelors degree in a field I am unsure on working in was fine in the beginning, but students should be spending time on what they love in college or educate themselves in the field they plan to work in. The stigmas and bits of rumors I have heard made me very unsure if switching to a dance major would be worth all of the time, effort, and expenses. As an outsider, I want to find out exactly: is becoming a dance major worth it?

MY THOUGHTS

After the amount of time I have spent researching dance majors, I have pondered on the thought of becoming a dance major more and more each day. My mind is leaning towards auditioning, and there’s a feeling of regret lingering because I’ve already wasted a year studying something else. On November 2nd, I talked to Stephanie Mills of the FSU School of Dance to see if I could observe a class and audition for the program in 2016. I truly want to be a part of this community and am happy to admit that I am going to at least audition in January or February. I would like to get a grasp on how the program is through the audition process before fully committing. If accepted, I will use the information I have collected through this process to make a potentially life-changing decision.
